How much was my cheap trip to CUBA?

After summarising all the costs of my latest trip to Cuba in March 2015 I discovered that it was my cheapest trip over a long period of time. There were many positive circumstances which contributed to this record-low budget, starting with the very cheap flight tickets from Madrid (Spain) to Havana (Cuba): 162 EUR return flight.

.

Heated discussions are going on till today whether it was a system error in the airline ticket system or just a very attractive promotion. Whatever it was, it definitely helped us to achieve this historical budget record.

.

My total budget (based on the 2-person team logistics) came to 829 EUR (929 USD or 3481 PLN) – including flights from Europe. The trip lasted 11 days: from 4th till 16th of March, 2015.

.

Here are the details (by expense category). Each column shows the budget converted to either PLN, EUR or USD (prices in CUC show our expenses in Cuba in the local currency).

The total budget was quite hard to estimate in advance because so many things could have gone wrong or at least differently. Cuba can be a very expensive country if the locals categorize you as “a rich foreign tourist” or it can be very cheap if they leave you alone and let you travel the way Cubans do.

.

Prices can be unpredictable if you do not know your ways around. On one hand we had very short time and a large agenda to follow so we could not spend too much time hunting for the “best-value”options, on the other hand in many cases we were just lucky to find these value options anyway. Accommodations in “casa particular” (Cuban private houses – “bed & breakfast” style) – turned out to be a very big saving while maintaining reasonable standards, to our surprise often higher than in other parts of the world.

.

Cuban trip was cheap but the views and photos priceless. I do hope that this information will help you if you plan to organize your own holiday. If you have any questions, you can ask in comments below,  I will be happy to help.
